Dr. Paul Joseph Brignac, Jr., 67, died on Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at Starkville Manor Nursing Home. He was born in New Orleans on Feb. 2, 1944.
Dr. Brignac received a bachelorâ€™s degree in chemistry in 1966 and a doctorate in 1970, both from the University of New Orleans.
Dr. Brignac taught Chemistry at Northwestern State University for 10 years. In 1978, he moved his family from Natchitoches, La., to Starkville, joining the Mississippi State University faculty.
After spending the remaining 32 years of his career as an analytical chemist and professor at MSU, he retired in June, 2010, as associate state chemist and QA officer. He was particularly proud of the year he served as interim state chemist. Dr. Brignac had numerous notable and recognized achievements during his distinguished career, including 12 publications.
Dr. Brignac was a parishioner of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Starkville. His favorite hobby was telling a good story and making people laugh. In addition, he was an avid tennis player and enjoyed gardening, woodworking and had a particular fondness for his dogs. He was a former member of the local Civitan Club, was a member of the Association of Analytical Chemists and contributed his time and expertise to numerous Committees and Workshops at MSU. His favorite meal usually included seafood, remembering his enjoyment of Cajun cooking in his native Louisiana. He always rooted for the New Orleans Saints and the Chicago White Sox.
Dr. Brignac was preceded in death by his parents, Paul J. Brignac and Juanita Prez Brignac.
Survivors include his wife, Helene Roger Brignac, of Starkville; his son, Reneâ€™ Brignac and wife, Erin, of Naperville, Ili.; daughters, Celeste, of Maroochydore, Queensland Australia, Nicole and husband Eric Cedor, of Covington, La., and Angelle, who recently returned to Starkville from New Orleans; his brother, Jimmy Brignac and wife Betty of Gretna, La.; granddaughters, Regan Therese and Lily Marie; grandsons, Spencer Paul and Parker Richard; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Dr. Brignac is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Starkville, with a â€śCelebration of Lifeâ€ť Mass immediately following. The Mass will be celebrated by pastor John Bohn; co-celebrating with him will be Fr. Michael Oâ€™Brien and Fr. William Henry.
A burial ceremony will be held at a later date.
Memorial contributions are requested in lieu of flowers and may be made payable to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 607 University Drive, Starkville, MS, for the benefit of the Benevolence Fund.
