Future of SHS on the lanes bright

November 16, 2011

The future of Starkville High School bowling is in good hands.
In a sport where having good hands are vital, the Yellowjackets are putting together a program that could be successful down the road.
The SHS junior varsity team has jumped out to an 8-0 record this season which encourages head coach Jim Philamlee.
"I'm especially pleased with the 8th and 9th graders," Philamlee said. "If they stay with us the next year, the year after and after that, we'll be tough. The key right now will be for these athletes to stay with us and I don't know any of the junior varsity kids that won't stay with us."
The Jackets continue their season today against East Webster at home. The action begins from Bulldog Lanes at 4 p.m.
Along with the junior varsity success, the SHS varsity boys are 5-3 overall, while the Lady Jackets have a 2-6 mark.
"The girls are not doing as well, but we practiced (Monday) and I primarily worked with the girls and we're focusing a little bit more on them," Philamlee said. "The girls are learning and improving. The girls team at Corinth was pretty good.
"The varsity boys are not doing as well as the junior varsity, but I've got three 9th graders (Ethan Tucker, Cody Prewitt and Hugh Stone) on the varsity boys. Before we could only use 10th, 11th and 12th graders on varsity boys and I moved some junior varsity boys up because they are good, because of their skill and what they are able to do."
In an overall assessment of his team, Philamlee's satisfaction stands at around No. 8 on a scale of 1-10.
Other bowlers Philamlee credited for helping in Starkville's success are Dessica Ivy. Akala Greenwood, Rob Montgomery, Mariah Newman, Will Prewitt, Tyler Dawkins, Brandon Le and Alex Newman.
Philamlee also pointed to offseason conditioning as something that will make a difference in the long run.
"We never had conditioning practices before," Philamlee said. "After I explained it to the Mississippi High School Activities Association, they agreed to it so we did 11 classes and I think that has helped."
