SSD’s ‘Dr. G’ is a top pick for La. school system

November 24, 2011

The Starkville School District may have two top jobs to fill in the coming weeks.
The district, which is in the process of searching for a new superintendent, may also lose Walter Gonsoulin, one of the district’s assistant superintendents. Gonsoulin is one of the top two contenders for a superintendent position for the Lafayette Parish School System in Louisiana.
By mid-December, Gonsoulin will know if he has the job, but it will leave him with a tough choice to make.
He has applied for the superintendent position for SSD, as well. However, the SSD school board has yet to even begin interviewing candidates for the position. If he gets the job in Lafayette, Gonsoulin will have to decide whether to take it or hold out for the superintendent spot here in Starkville.
“I’m going to have to make a tough decision,” he said. “Initially, to be perfectly honest, I didn’t want Starkville to be my first superintendent job that I applied for. I wanted the experience of interviewing and competing at that level.”
He will have an interview with the Mississippi School Board Association for the position next Wednesday. Once MSBA completes the interviews of all 23 applicants, it will compile a report for the school board, whose members will then decide which of the applicants they would like to interview.
At the November school board meeting, board President Keith Coble said MSBA could not give him a firm timeline on when the board would receive that report. As the holidays grow closer, it is likely the board may not be able to set up interviews until after the new year.
Gonsoulin said he still feels like he has a lot to offer the district and would love to serve as superintendent.
“Starkville is home for me. I love the community. I love the people I work for,” he said. “I think the school district is really headed in the right direction, and I’ve been a part of that for the last four years. I would like to continue to have vision and show leadership within the district.”
