Dr. Sammy J. Tramel, age 81, died Dec. 11, 2011, at OCH Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at First Baptist Church in Starkville, with the celebration of his life following at 11 a.m.
Burial will follow at Memorial Gardens Park.
Sam was born Oct. 2, 1930, as the 10th of 11 children of Winstead and Onie Develin Tramel and grew up on their farm seven miles northeast of Raleigh. He was a Korean War veteran and earned the Korean Service Medal with two bronze campaign stars.
After his military service, Sam finished a bachelorâ€™s degree in physics at Mississippi State University and earned masterâ€™s and doctoral degrees in mathematics at Louisiana State University. He retired from the MSU mathematics department in 1992.
Besides his parents, Sam was predeceased in death by four brothers and three sisters: Thomas E. (Boe), Elton (Snook), Bobby Ray, Ervin, Mary, Florene and Louella.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy Robinson (Dot) Tramel; four daughters: Jo Anne (Bill) McMahan of Starkville, Myrna (Al) Boyd of Madison, Ala., Dr. Michaelle (Paul) Harrison of Ocean Springs and Milissa (Paul) Hastings of Huntsville, Ala.; seven grandchildren: Michaelle Maxwell (Tyler) Staples of Greenwood, Charles and Leah Boyd, David and Anna Laurin Harrison, and Joseph and Anna Grace Hastings; two great-granddaughters, Britton and Ann Baxter Staples.
Sam's three surviving sisters are Lilla Parker of Madison, Dorothy (Marion) Brown of Petal and Sue (Bill) Grissett of Madison. Also, he leaves 23 nieces and nephews and about 50 grand-nieces and nephews.
Sam was a member of Starkville First Baptist Church, a Mason, and VFW member.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Mississippi Sheriffs' Boys and Girls Ranch or to Palmer Home for Children (the address is the same for both: P.O. Box 746, Columbus, MS 39703-9983) or to a favorite charity.
