The Starkville School District Board of Trustees is expected to produce a list of candidates to interview for the district’s superintendent position during tonight’s 6 p.m. meeting in the Greensboro Center.
“I still have a very positive impression of the pool,” board President Keith Coble said. “(The meeting) is going to start the process in how we move forward.”
The Mississippi School Board Association spent several weeks in November interviewing candidates, checking references and writing up a report. The school board received the report in December, but took the holiday break to review the extensive report and make decisions.
Coble said the board members will discuss whom they would like to interview in executive session tonight.
“There are no guarantees that we’ll all be in agreement, of course,” Coble said. “I think the board members will come into that meeting with their own evaluation of the candidates.”
Board members do not have a set number of candidates for the short list.
Once the board comes up with the list, the individuals will be contacted, the list will be confirmed and the names will be released to the public.
Coble said he hopes the interview process will begin as quickly as possible though logistics may become an issue. Fourteen of the candidates are from Mississippi, but there are also two from Alabama and one from Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Mexico and Pennsylvania each. The district will likely provide travel accommodations for the interviews, which could prove complicated with applicants from all over the country.
Though the pool produced an impressive list of applicants with a wide range of experience and education, Coble said the interviews would be the real test to see who would be the best fit for the school district.
In other business, the board will discuss adding a mid-year budget review to its annual calendar and upcoming school board training.
