MSU baseball team gets back to work

January 11, 2012

There are just 36 days remaining until Mississippi State returns to the baseball diamond as the Bulldogs open the 2012 season against Washington State University on Friday, Feb. 17.
With opening day in mind, MSU has begun preparation for the season and head coach John Cohen is pleased with his team’s first couple days of work.

The Bulldogs, which finished last season with a 38-25 record and one win short of a trip to Omaha, Neb., for the College World Series, continue their four-on-one work outs for the next couple of weeks before they open team practice on Jan. 27.
Super Bulldog
Weekend with a twist
Mississippi State announced on Wednesday its plan to charge $25 for the spring football game which is part of Super Bulldog Weekend.

MSU will be trying a new format for the featured event of the spring homecoming for State fans as they will host Grammy Award-winning Sugarland as part of the spring game activities.

“We believe this to be a 'first of its kind' event,” Scott Stricklin said in his weekly newsletter. “Here’s how it will work: The concert stage will be set up in the north end zone (facing the video board). As soon as the Maroon-White game ends, the concert begins.”

The $25 charge for reserved seating will allow fans to enjoy both the Maroon and White spring football game as well as an evening of entertainment from Sugarland.

MSU facilities update
Mississippi State is on track to complete the Leo Seal Jr. Football Complex according to Sticklin's newsletter.

The concrete footings are in place with the steel structure to be resurrected later this spring. The anticipated opening of the complex is set for late 2012 or early 2013.

The university also has plans to meet with architecture firms in the coming days to continue discussion for the expansion of Davis Wade Stadium. Details on the project have yet to be released.

With baseball on the way Dudy Noble Field installation of a new sounds system is underway. The project brings additional speakers under the grandstand, in the restrooms, and down both the third and first base lines have been completed.  They’ve also ordered updated championship banners to place under the grandstand and will be installed shortly. A new ribbon board, complete with a pitch speed gun display, should be completed this month.

Saulsberry to play
at East-West Shrine

It was released on Tuesday that Quentin Saulberry, a senior offensive lineman on last season's Music City Bowl winning football team for MSU, will participate in the East-West Shrine Game.

Saulsberry has the distinction of being the only player in Mississippi State history to play and start in every one of his games as a Bulldog (50). He was named Associated Press All-Southeastern Conference honorable mention following his senior season in 2011.

During his four years at Mississippi State, Saulsberry played and excelled at four different starting positions along the offensive line.

After defeating Wake Forest in the 2011 Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl, the Coldwater, native finished his 2011 campaign with 45 takedowns, grading out a champion in six games.

The East-West Shrine Game is the longest-running all-star college football game, dating back to 1925 and has 246 former players on current NFL rosters. It will be played on Jan. 21 with kickoff set for 4 p.m. at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. The game will be televised by the NFL Network.
