SA Girls use defense to beat Hilcrest

January 18, 2012

JACKSON – The Starkville Academy girls' basketball team never allowed more than 10 points a quarter Tuesday night against Hillcrest Christian.

The Lady Volunteers went on to defeat the Lady Cougars 48-16.

SA jumped out early in the first quarter and took an 18-3 lead into the second period. They did even better in the second frame defensively only giving up two points. However, they only scored four themselves.

They took a 22-5 lead into the locker room at intermission.

"Our defense was good," Starkville Academy head coach Glenn Schmidt said. "I think we really shocked Hillcrest. We came out firing and made some shots and they weren't able to get anything going offensively.
The second half wouldn't be much better for the Lady Cougars as they only managed to score 11 points.

Sallie Kate Richardson led all scorers with 14 points. Anna Lea Little added 10 points and 10 rebounds for SA.

"She (Little) had a really good game. We played a lot of people so not a lot of minutes for her to get her double-double. She was never able to get into a rhythm offensively, but it's pretty good to get 10 points and 10 rebounds."

The Lady Vols improved their record to 22-3 overall and 8-0 in division.
