Members of the Girl Scouts Heart of the South can now say, “There’s an app for that.”
The Girl Scouts council, which covers 59 counties in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas, including Oktibbeha County, just released the very first council-specific mobile app.
“This year is our 100th anniversary, and I like to think we’re moving forward into the next 100 years with this app,” Jenny Jones, director of marketing and communications for Girl Scouts Heart of the South, said. “This is a great opportunity for our girls and for our leaders.”
The app features blogs, news and a calendar for Girl Scouts Heart of the South events, and has helpful features for those not involved with the organization, like the Safety Activity Checkpoint.
“The Safety Activity Checkpoint is a national resource developed by the Girl Scouts of the USA. It covers every activity that’s covered for a Girl Scout to do, like horseback riding, for example. You can look it up and it tells you everything you need to know about safety standards — how many adults you’d need, making sure everyone wears helmets — things like that,” Jones said. “Any volunteer in the country could find that part of the app beneficial.”
The checkpoints were featured in book-form, but the app will make it more accessible.
“That would be something that would be great so you wouldn’t have to be tied to a computer while you were out involved in activities,” Cindy Coggins, leader of Troop 320 in Starkville, said. “Usually you have to go print it out, but you never know when you might hit a situation when you need to do a quick check.”
Coggins said that while she does not have a smart phone, she thinks having the information readily available will be helpful to troop leaders.
Users can customize the app’s settings to tailor the information specifically for families, volunteers or Girl Scouts. Locations and directions for the council’s campsites and regional offices are also available.
The app is available on both the Apple and Android mobile markets. To find the app, search “Girl Scouts Heart of the South” in the companies’ respective app stores.
