COLUMBUS – The Starkville High School Yellowjackets took control early to defeat the Columbus Falcons on the road Tuesday night.

The Jackets improved to 17-3 by defeating the Falcons 54-36.

Starkville opened the game with a 10-2 run but Columbus fought back to close out the quarter on an 11-5 run of its own when C.J. Scott hit a 30-foot shot at the buzzer.

The Jackets pushed its lead out to 10 points at the break leading 29-19.
In the second half, the Falcons employed stall tactics to keep the game close, but Starkville would not be denied as it applied half-court pressure forcing the pace to quicken.

“We are steadily adjusting to these contrasting styles we keep facing,” said Greg Carter, head coach of the Jackets. “We seem to get a fast-paced game and then a slow-paced game. Last weekend we played Canton and Noxubee County and I don’t know if you can get any faster than them.”

Brandon Porter led the Falcons in scoring with eight points and despite the slow-paced game, seniors Gavin Ware and Jacolby Mobley turned in 16 points each to set the tone for Starkville.

“I really rely on the seniors, they know,” Carter said. “They’ve been around and they’ve seen it for the last three years. They’ve been a part of it so they’ve been around enough to know you’ve got to be able to play slow-paced games.”

The Jackets will once again be on the road Friday as they travel to Yazoo City to face an Indian team that defeated Starkville on their home floor two weeks ago.

The Lady Jackets had a rather rough road trip to Columbus as they came up on the short end.

The Lady Falcons (18-2) jumped on Starkville (10-10) early and never relinquished their control of the game.

For the Lady Falcons, Kiandria Patterson turned in 26 points to lead all scorers while Brittany Brown and Janay Townsel both had 12 each to pace the Lady Jackets.
