Ms. Mary Elizabeth (Hartness) Nix, 92, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012, at OCH Regional Medical Center in Starkville. She was a beloved secretary at Starkville High School, a comptroller with the accounting department at Mississippi State University and a Presbyterian. At Mississippi State University, she was Miss MSU and Homecoming Queen (first non-sorority person to be elected homecoming queen), a cheerleader for two years and a honorary cadet colonel.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Nix Sr.; son, Jack Nix, Jr.; sister, Billy Blake Hartness Corbell; and parents, Lawrence Billups Hartness and Mary Blake Johnson Hartness.
She is survived by her sons, Larry Nix (Joyce) of Cumming, Ga, and Mike Nix (Beth) of Huntsville, Ala.; sister, Martha Wade of Starkville; six grandchildren, Cindy, Jay, Larry, Jr., Alina, Blake and Cameron (all serving as pallbearers); and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at the Welch Funeral Home Chapel.
Burial will follow at Oddfellows Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, 2012, at Welch Funeral Home in Starkville.
