Ralph S. Wofford

Mr. Ralph Scott “Scotty” Wofford, 88, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, in Starkville. Mr. Wofford was born in Mantee on July 18,1923.
He enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps when he was 18 and was called to active duty during his sophomore year of college. He served his country in the Pacific Theatre as a P-38 fighter pilot, ultimately reaching the rank of second lieutenant. Years after active service, he continued to enjoy flying, including serving in the Air Force Reserve and with the Civil Air Patrol.
Scotty studied at Wood Junior College. He received his bachelor of science degree in accounting at MSU and his master’s degree in accounting from the University of Denver, in Denver, Colo. He became a licensed Certified Public Accountant in 1950.
After earning his masters, he taught briefly at North Texas State University. Then Scotty returned to MSU as an accounting professor under the tutelage of his mentor, Mr. W. W. Littlejohn. After teaching for five short years, he went to work for the Miss. Public Service Commission. Two years later he returned to MSU, where he taught for almost 30 years, along with his good friends Joe Curry, Bill Simmons and others. Teaching and guiding students was his vocation.
In addition to teaching, he established Curry and Wofford accounting firm with his friend and colleague, Joe Curry. The firm ultimately became part of T. E. Lott & Co.
During his free time, Scotty enjoyed golf with his friends at Starkville Country Club and all MSU sports. He also enjoyed his time with his growing family including nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Scotty is preceded in death by his parents, Faye Ball and Jeffie Scott Wofford, and his wife, Edith Thomas Wofford.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Luttrell McMinn Wofford, and children, Jean Ann Wofford Foxworth (Randell; children: Laura and Eric Tramel; Forrest and Ginny Foxworth, and great-grandchildren: Ruby and Lee; and Stirling Foxworth); David Scott Wofford (Helen; children: Jeff and Amy Wofford, and great-grandson Dylan, Zane Daniel Wofford, and Jessica Wofford); Thomas Eugene Wofford (Tracy; children: Koby Wofford, Nathan Wofford, and Mary Scott Wofford); Mary Catherine McMinn Hull (Dennis; children: Christopher Hull, Catherine and Jordan Fluth, Celeste Hull, and Conner Hull); Alan McMinn (Mary; children: Steven McMinn and Hanna McMinn); and Heather McMinn Peeler (Robert; child, Ashton).
Scotty was an involved community leader and an active member of First Presbyterian of Starkville. He was a Life Loyal Sigma Chi, Mid-Way Investment Club charter member and long-time Rotary member. He recently retired as an East Miss. Community College trustee.
Visitation for Mr. Wofford will be held on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church in Starkville from noon to 2 p.m. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2 p.m. in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian. Rev. Steve Davis will conduct the services. Burial will follow at Memorial Garden Park.
