Oktibbeha County deputies discovered what is believed to be human skeletal remains in the Adaton community approximately a quarter of a mile from Reed Road Tuesday.
Deputies also recovered personal effects believed to be with the remains.
OCSO Commander Brett Watson said officers were initially called around 1:30 p.m.
“We got a call from a concerned citizen who stumbled upon partial human remains when walking the fence line on his property,” Watson said. “We went out there and were able to recover (the remains), and we’ve taken those into custody. They’re going to be sent to the state medical examiner’s office for DNA testing and other testing.”
He said the area where the remains were found was heavily wooded and overgrown with brush and they appeared to be in place “for an extended period of time.”
“We’re going to be contacting surrounding counties in the area to see if they have any missing persons,” he said. “We hope to make an identification as early as possible.”
Investigation into the discovery is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call OCSO at 662-323-2421 or Golden Triangle Crimestoppers at 1-800-530-7151.
