Callaway beats SHS in North finals

JACKSON – The Starkville High School boys' basketball team played two totally different halves Saturday night.

The Yellowjackets fell to Callaway 59-48 in the Class 5A North Half Championship game at Forest HIll High School.

Starkville took a 29-23 lead into the locker room at halftime, but saw it slip away in the second half.

The Chargers came out in the third quarter and outscored the Jackets 14-10 to only trail by two points at 39-37 heading into the final quarter.

Callaway used a 22-point final frame to come away with the victory.
"We didn't play very well," Starkville head coach Greg Carter said. "We played good in the first half. We didn't in the second half. They were more physical than us and pushed us around."

The score was tied at 11 each after the first quarter.

"We had a lot of open shots we just didn't make them," Carter said. "We can't complain about our shots because they were there. We just couldn't hit them. They made theirs."

Jacolby Mobley led the Jackets with 21 points.

One night after recording a double-double and scoring a game-high 27 points, Mississippi State signee Gavin Ware scored just 15 points.

Even with the loss, Starkville will participate in the state tournament and will be the North No. 2 seed.

The Jackets, which saw their record fall to 27-4, play Wayne County, which was ranked No. 2 preseason, in the first round on February 28 at 8 p.m. in Jackson.
