Oktibbeha County deputies arrested and charged Beverly Roberts, 36, of 803A Blocker Road with uttering forgery for allegedly attempting to pay her taxes with counterfeit $20 bills Friday.
Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said the Oktibbeha County Tax Assessor and Collector’s Office called the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office while Roberts was still there in regards to the validity of her currency.
“(Investigative Sgt.) Brandon Griggs went to the scene (and) looked at the bills. Through his training he felt they were counterfeit,” Garnett said. “He brought the person to the sheriff’s department to be interviewed ... and through the investigation she was charged with uttering forgery. The bills were confiscated and will be passed on to the Secret Service.”
Griggs said while working a recent shift he heard several calls through the city of Starkville about counterfeit bills Starkville Police Department patrolmen responded to.
Garnett said the bills themselves are at first glance easy to mistake for legitimate currency, but there are slight size differences.
“These are noticeably smaller. We took a regular size bill, laid it down and laid this one on top of it. (The counterfeit bill) was about a half-inch shorter and probably a quarter-inch as far as the width of it,” he said.
He said OCSO wants residents to be on the lookout for counterfeit money.
“The main thing we want to do is make sure the citizens of Oktibbeha County are aware these bills are floating around,” Garnett said.
He said the incident is still under investigation and information on how the bills got into circulation will not be released.
