February 22, 2012

PELAHATCHIE – The Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers got off to a good start in their quest to win their second state championship in two weeks as it defeated Presbyterian Christian 62-37 at the AAA State Tournament at East Rankin Academy Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Vols jumped out to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. They increased the margin to 343-15 by halftime.

"It was a great team win," Starkville Academy girls coach Glenn Schmidt said. "We had three people (to score) in double figures and had good defensive play from everybody really, but Anna Prestridge set the tone with her pressure of the basketball."

Prestridge, who had six steals, was the leading scorer for the Lady Vols with 15 points, but was joined in double digits by Anna Lea Little with 14 points and Sallie Kate Richardson with 12 points. Richardson was the leading rebounder with seven.

As a team, the Lady Vols shot 46 percent (27-of-59) from the field and held Presbyterian Christian to 36 percent (13-of-36). Starkville Academy out-rebounded PCS 26-21.

The Lady Vols, who improved to 33-5 overall, play Jackson Academy at 1 p.m. Friday.
