Rebecca Overstreet

March 6, 2012

Mrs. Rebecca Gartin Overstreet, a long-time resident of Starkville, died March 5, 2012.
Born Feb. 21, 1925, in Meridian, Mrs. Overstreet grew up in both Greenwood and Jackson. She graduated from Greenwood High School and received a degree in piano and voice from Mississippi University for Women in 1947.
On Sept. 13, 1947, she married Bolan Massengale Overstreet, from Starkville. Mrs. Overstreet was a homemaker for the 65 years she and her husband, Bo, were married.
Mrs. Overstreet was devoted to her Lord, her family and her friends. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Starkville where she was a very active member. Becky lived out her devotion to God by using her talents as a seamstress, making clothes for poor children in foreign countries, fabric books for toddlers in the church nursery and stitching beautiful works of art for family, friends and church members. She was an inquiring follower of God, studying the Bible and living the words she read.
For years, she and Bo traveled about Starkville delivering Meals on Wheels. She was inspired by the work of Habitat for Humanity and delivered dozens of her famous teacakes to Habitat workers. As a devoted wife, mother, sister, cousin, grandmother and great-mother, Becky was known for her loving commitment. All relatives and friends could count on their birthday cards to arrive on the exact day of the occasion. Friends became family members in Becky Overstreet’s home. She will be greatly missed by many.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Bolan Massengale Overstreet; daughter, Cathy Rebecca Overstreet Stanford (Mark Adrick) of Plano, Texas; son, Raymond Gartin Overstreet (Karen) of Columbus; sisters, Janette Richardson and Beverly Bushching; a cousin, Barbara Anderson; and her grandchildren, Brian Stanford, Rebecca Mattern, Wade Overstreet, Kane Overstreet and Blair Overstreet. She is also survived by her beloved caregiver Linda Harris.
She was preceded in death by her cousin, Cecil Matherney.
Visitation will be held 1-2 p.m. Friday, March 9, 2012, at First Presbyterian Church with the memorial service immediately following in the sanctuary at 2 p.m.
Welch Funeral Home of Starkville is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 55634, Jackson, MS 39296-5634.
