Starkville Academy drops baseball decision at PCS

HATTIESBURG – The first division game for the Starkville Academy Volunteers did not turn out as they hoped.

The Vols fell 6-5 to Presbyterian Christian Tuesday night.

With the game tied at four each heading to the seventh inning, SA scored the go ahead run.

The Bobcats scored two in the bottom of the final frame to lift them to victory.

"They just got a few people on and we had to bring our infield in," SA head coach Neal Henry said. "They got a key hit that won the game."

Hunter Bolin took the mound for the Vols. He pitched 6.1 innings giving up four hits, surrendering four walks and striking out eight batters. He gave up three earned runs.

"I like the way they battled and competed," Henry said.

The Volunteers scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Presbyterian Christian matched that in the bottom of the inning to send it to the fourth in a 2-2 tie.

The sixth inning was a duplicate of the third inning, as both teams scored two runs each.

Drew Pellum and Alex Holtcamp each had two hits for the Volunteers. SA fell to 8-3 overall and 0-1 in division play.

"The thing about baseball is you don't have to wait a week," Henry said. "We get to turnaround and play them again (today). We are going to go back out there and compete."

The Volunteers and the Bobcats are scheduled for a doubleheader today at 3 p.m. with the second game to follow at 5 p.m.
