Mississippi State is set to open spring football practice Thursday and without question one of the focal points will be the wide receivers.

State is looking forward to adding Joe Morrow and Devin Fosselman to the mix of an already talented group of wideouts that will not include Michael Carr.

Tuesday afternoon Bulldog fans learned the rather unfortunate news that the West Point native, would no longer don the maroon and white for head coach Dan Mullen and Mississippi State.

“He is no longer with the team,” said Mullen on Tuesday afternoon. “He decided to quit the team. He just doesn’t really want to play football any more.”

The much-heralded receiver helped the Green Wave to state titles prior to suiting up for Mississippi State during his freshman season in 2010.

During his career, Carr saw action in 16 games with undoubtedly his biggest performance coming in the 2012 Gator Bowl where he caught three passes for 65 yards, including a 31-yard scoring grab.

Last season, Carr hauled in seven footballs for 90 yards before he left the team for personal reasons after eight games.

The standout receiver returned to MSU in January to give football another try, but ultimately his heart simply wasn’t in it.

The Bulldogs hit the practice field at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon with the entire session open to the public.
