One of the up and coming freshman for the Starkville Yellowjackets tennis team is experiencing a fresh start this season.
After trying his hand at boys doubles, SHS freshman Richard Hill has shifted over to boys singles.
So far, the change has worked out well for Hill and the Jackets.
Hill defeated Jonathan Bradley of Canton 6-0, 6-0 in boys singles as Starkville swept the match 7-0 at home Monday.
The progression in tennis for Hill has come with hard work over the last three years competing for the Jackets.
"I've been practicing every day," Hill said. "(SHS) Coach (Rob) Fyke has helped a lot and has come out here and helped us with what we needed to do."
Canton was only able to win two games during the 14 sets played in the Class 5A, Region 3 match.
"We felt like we were pretty good and had a chance to win district," Fyke said. "This was the first chance to do that."
Hannah Laird of the Jackets beat Kieara Hoskins 6-0, 6-0 in girls singles, while Lewis Maynard and Brian Xu played doubles together for the first time and won a 6-0, 6-0 decision in the No. 1 boys position.
"They dominated like expected," Fyke said. "They played a good match together."
In the other results for SHS, Jack Bryan and Aaron Remotigue won 6-0, 6-1 in No. 2 No. 2 boys doubles, Ashley Albritton and Christine Mazzola won 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 girls doubles, Carolina Berryhill and Katy Wood won 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 girls doubles, and Nick Elder and Mikala Taylor won 6-0, 6-0 in mixed doubles.
The Jackets travel to Yazoo City Thursday for another district match and play at New Albany next Monday in a non-division match before hosting division opponent Neshoba Central in a rain makeup on April 4.
