Supervisors offer college scholarship

March 28, 2012

For the 12th consecutive year, the Mississippi Association of Supervisors’ Minority Caucus will award 14 scholarships to graduating seniors who will continue their education in Mississippi.

Three students will be selected from each of the four Congressional Districts within the state, and an additional two at large winners will be selected to each receive a one-time scholarship of $1,000.

Although the scholarships are offered by the MAS Minority Caucus, the awards are open to any student. The only requirement is for the student to attend a higher education institution within Mississippi — whether it is a junior college, community college, traditional four-year college or technical school.

“I would encourage any person who is a graduating senior, regardless of race or ethnic or educational background, whether they went to public, private, city, county or home school to apply for this,” Oktibbeha County District 2 Supervisor Orlando Trainer said.
Trainer said a number of previous scholarship recipients were from Oktibbeha County.

“We want people to know that there is aid out there to assist them in acquiring higher education,” he said. “It may be just $1,000, but that can go a long way to help a student buy books or whatever they may need in regards to college.”

Students must complete the application, including a brief biography, two letters of recommendation, an official transcript, a copy of a letter of acceptance from a Mississippi institution and an essay. The essay asks students to explain how their county is expressing a vision for the future of that county and to name their state delegation, Congressional delegation and county supervisors.

Applications should be mailed to: Bobby Rushing, Jefferson Davis Co. Supervisor, P.O. Box 1317, Prentiss, MS 39474.
Applications are due April 15, and winners will be announced May 7.
