Jackets welcome Jones

April 27, 2012

There was a lot of buzz around the hiring of the new Starkville High School baseball coach Thursday morning.

Brain Jones, former Neshoba Central head coach, was introduced as the new Yellowjacket coach in the SHS library.

Jones spent the past 12 years as the Rockets head coach and the four previous years as an assistant under former Mississippi State pitcher and current East Webster head coach Wes Johnson. He also spent one year as an assistant at South Leake.

"I think he will do a good job," Johnson said. "He has been a good coach for a long time. His record speaks for itself. He is very good at teaching the fundamentals of the game."

The Jackets are still in the playoffs so it will be some time before he gets to meet the players.

He did get to meet sophomore catcher Harper Day. Day introduced himself after the press conference.

"He seems like a real good coach," Day said. "He is going to bring a lot of energy which we need. He has the determination to win. He is all in. He is really what we need."

Jones remembered Day from their meetings this season and is very high on the catcher position.

"He did extremely good job, especially defensively," Jones said. "I look forward to getting a little closer relationship with him and learning him a little bit more. (I'm) excited at the same time. (I'm) just looking toward the future with these guys."

Other Jacket coaches were on hand for the press conference. Football coach Jamie Mitchell was present and does not know Jones personally, but knows the type of coach he is and was impressed with his press conference.

"I am looking forward to getting to know him a little bit," Mitchell said. "I am very familiar with the program he had (at Neshoba Central). My son played at Itawamba (Community College). We played them in the playoffs back three or four years ago. I am very familiar with the kind of program he has run. He has some great baseball teams so it's pretty obvious he is going to do a great job."

SHS basketball head coach Greg Carter attended the press conference and was impressed with what he had to say.

"This is the first time I have met him," Carter said. "I don't know very many baseball coaches. He seems like a really nice guy. It seems like he is pretty excited to be here."

After the season is complete, Jones replaces legendary coach Danny Carlisle who has spent the past 35 years in the school district and the past 29 as the SHS baseball coach.
