RIDGELAND – The Starkville Academy Volunteers got the season started off successfully Friday night with a 13-0 shutout against St. Andrews.
Starkville Academy didn't waste any time by scoring on its first possession of the game as quarterback Drew Pellum ran for a 6-yard touchdown. Jonathan Burton added to extra point kick for the Vols.
In the second quarter, sophomore running back Michael Miller, who led SA with 68 yards on 15 carries, scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. That was the final scoring of the game as the extra point was no good.
The Volunteers had 211 yards of total offense with 166 coming on the ground and 45 through the air.
Following Miller in the rushing department was Colby Runnels with 55 yards on 10 carries. Runnels also caught all three passes for 45 yards to give him 100 total yards.
The SA defense stayed in the backfield of St. Andrew's most of the night and held its opponent to a minus-32 yards rushing. St. Andrews did manage 127 yards of total offense by generating some passing numbers.
Stephen Robertson, Drew Harrell and Bailey Newell led the way for the Vols on defense.
Starkville Academy returns home next Friday when they take on Golden Triangle rival Heritage Academy. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
