Starkville High School football coach Jamie Mitchell and his staff did not determine until Thursday evening that quarterback-defensive back Gabe Myles, a member of the Starkville Daily News Preseason Top 10 team, would not be able to play against the Madison Central Jaguars because of an ankle injury.
Myles, a Mississippi State commitment, had a grade one sprain of his ankle that just would not heal in time to be available to the Jackets for the second game of the season.
The SHS coaches had held out hope all week that Myles would be ready.
"We decided on Thursday that he couldn't go," Mitchell said. "It was our full expectation on Tuesday and even through (Thursday) that he would be ready."
The Jackets were scheduled to play the Jaguars at 7:06 p.m. Friday. The game was set for CSS television and may not be available in all areas.
