Oktibbeha County authorities have an unidentified person of interest in custody after a shooting late Tuesday night on Pierce Road near Maben.
Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said personnel responded to a call at approximately 11:40 p.m. Tuesday regarding a female who had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
Garnett said the victim was transported via ambulance to North Mississippi Medical Center in Eupora and later airlifted to NMMC in Tupelo.
Sheriff Steve Gladney said the victim is in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
No additional information on her condition was available as of press time.
Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Department Commander Brett Watson said as of Wednesday afternoon, her condition was critical but stable.
Garnett said the person of interest turned himself in by calling the sheriff’s department.
It is not known whether or not there is any other person linked to the incident who is still at large, he said.
Gladney said investigators are hoping to speak with the victim when her condition improves enough to be able to provide information.
“We’ve got to get through the early stages of the investigation,” Gladney said. “Brett (Watson) didn’t want to go up there if he couldn’t see her.”
There were no official charges against the person of interest as of press time.
