A man is in Columbus Police Department custody three weeks after a sexual assault was reported to Mississippi University for Women campus officers.
Jamerrell Antwon Brandon, 27, of 822 16th Street North in Columbus, was arrested Monday and charged with one count of sexual assault.
On Sept. 4, MUW police received a report of a sexual assault that allegedly occurred on Aug. 16.
CPD confirmed Brandon was not enrolled at MUW. A university press release said Brandon was an acquaintance of the victim.
MUW’s police department has collaborated with CPD throughout the course of the investigation, President Jim Borsig said.
“We are fortunate to have as good a partner in Columbus Police Department as we do,” he said. “Their professionalism has helped wrap this up in a timely manner. I am appreciative of the work of both MUWPD and CPD.”
He said campus residence hall workers and police officers continue working to ensure safety on campus.
“Having a secure campus is very important to us as a university. We have an excellent police department and community living staff that are both taking further steps to make sure our campus remains safe,” he said.
The university’s gated campus has several gated entrances open during the day as well as secondary entrance points available between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. on weekends. One main entrances is always open and monitored by a guard.
According to MUW’s website, the campus has six residence halls: Callaway, Columbus, Grossnickle, Hasting/Simmons, Kincannon and Jones halls.
It is not known were on campus the incident occurred.
