Mr. Paul B. Jacob, 90, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2012 in Meridian.
Funeral services will held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 at First Baptist Church in Starkville with Rev. Clifton Curtis officiating.
Visitation will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 28, 2012 preceding the service.
Welch Funeral Home in Starkville is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Jacob retired from Mississippi State University in 1988 as Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering and Associate Head of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department where he served for 43 years.
He was a native of Columbus and received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from Mississippi State University.
During WWII, he spent two years in atomic energy research at Oak Ridge, Tenn. At the end of war, he returned to his alma mater as a faculty member in the Electrical Enginering Department. After receiving a master's degree in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern Unviersity, he once again returned to Mississipi State University where he spent the remainder of his professional career in teaching and research in the field of electric power systems with emphasis in high voltage engineering.
He was the founder and designer of the High Voltage Laboratory of MSU and became its first Director. After his retirement, that laboratory was named in his honor. His professional activities included membership and participation in organizations both national and international in which world wide electrical operational and safety standards are developed for the power industry.
He was a consultant to numerous electrical equipment manufacturers and electric utility companies and was a registered electrical engineer. Within the academic side of his career he was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the national electrical engineering honor society. He served on its National Board of Directors and later as National Vice President and National President. Other professional and academic honors included membership in Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa.
In 1987, he was elected as the Mississippi State University Alumnus of the Year. In 2003, one of his former students in the 1960s provided the full funding of the Paul B. Jacob Endowed Professional Chair in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at MSU. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, and as an alumnus served on its National Board of Directors and later as National President.
He is listed in Who’s Who in America. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Starkville, and was a long time member of the Bain Sunday School Class. He also served as Deacon and Sunday School teacher and a member of numerous church committees.
He had particular interest in and involvement with University students. He was a long time member of the Starkville Rotary Club and has served as president.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; sons, Bill and wife Ruth of Meridian and Bernard and wife Sandi of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; five grandchildren, Bill Jr. and wife Amy of Meridian, Kristen and husband Ed Baker of Southern Pines, N.C., Allison of Jacksonville, Fla., Megan Hart and husband Andrew of Savannah, Ga. and Paul and wife Natalie of Sabine Pass, Texas; four great-grandchildren, Chloe and Cameron Jacob of Meridian, and Mabel and Jeb Baker of Southern Pines. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul B. Jacob Sr. and Dorsey Jamison Jacob.
