Kewon Delarryous Doss was found guilty of manslaughter during the third and final week of Oktibbeha County Circuit Court’s fall term.
He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Doss was previously charged with killing 38-year-old Larry Davis, his uncle, in January.
Doss lived with Davis on 1816 Stowood Road, where the shooting occurred. County deputies said Davis died from a single gunshot wound to the torso from a medium-caliber handgun at approximately 2 p.m. Jan. 9. Davis was pronounced dead at the scene when investigators arrived. Doss was not at the residence and was considered at large when deputies discovered Davis’ body.
The pursuit for Doss took deputies to a pasture in the Rock Hill Road area in eastern Oktibbeha County. Deputies returned to the sheriff’s office to develop a search plan after an unsuccessful five-hour manhunt. It was during that time at approximately 9:45 p.m. that Doss turned himself in with the assistance of family members.
After Doss was arrested, Chief Deputy Chadd Garnett said the suspect had prior misdemeanor and felony charges.
Doss was also ordered to pay a $1,200 fine and $4,890 in restitution.
Starkville Daily News will print a full circuit court report in Sunday’s edition.
