OXFORD – The 109th Egg Bowl did not disappoint.
It also sported the longest run in series history.
After Ole Miss took an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter, Mississippi State sophomore wide receiver Jameon Lewis took the ensuing kickoff 100 yards for a score.
"I just did what coach (told) me to do," Lewis said. "The blocking was set up, so I just ran. I didn't have too much to do. They were blocking real good for me."
It was the longest play in Egg Bowl history.
The kickoff return was also the fifth 100-yard play in the 113-year history of MSU football. Three have been kickoff returns and two have been interceptions.
It was also the fourth 100-yard play in the Southeastern Conference in 2012.
Lewis's kickoff return touchdown was the first for the Bulldogs since Oct. 2, 2010 when when Leon Berry ran one back for 97 yards against Alcorn State.
It is the first in league play since Kevin Prentiss' 91-yard kickoff return for a score against South Carolina on Sept. 26, 1998.
Russell yet again
in record book
Junior quarterback Tyler Russell has already had a great season.
Saturday night his just added to what has already been a career setting year.
Russell found Chad Bumphis for a 42-yard passing score late in the first quarter to give him 24 total scores this season.
That ties Jackie Parker's 60-year old single-season school record for touchdowns responsible. Parker set the mark in 1952.
Russell is now in sixth place at Mississippi State in career passing yardage with 4,460 yards.
Russell passed for 268 yards. That gives him eight 200-yard passing games this season and is a school record.
He now has nine 200-yard passing games in his career it is tied for fourth in MSU history.
The Bulldogs also broke the single-season school record for passing completions in a season with 237.
They are also tied for third in passing attempts in a season with 395.
to shine for Bulldogs
Senior linebacker Cameron Lawrence has been a force in the middle for the Bulldog defense this year.
He picked off two Bo Wallace passes in the first half.
He is the third Bulldog this season to have two interceptions in the same game. Johnthan Banks had two against Auburn on Sept. 8 and Darius Slay had two against Troy on Sept. 15.
Lawrence ended the night with 13 total tackles. That gives him three consecutive games with double-digit tackles this season.
Lawrence also had three tackles for loss.
Perkins having great
year with all-purpose yards
Junior tailback LaDarius Perkins passed Mardye McDole for sixth all-time in career all purpose yards.
Perkins now has 3,379. McDole had 3,353 from 1977-80.
He now has 1,425 all-purpose yards for the season and it is sixth all-time at MSU.
Bulldogs win turnover battle
but lose the ballgame
MSU is 23-2 under Dan Mullen when they win the turnover margin.
The Bulldogs were plus one in the turnover margin department, but ended up losing the game.
The Bulldogs trailed 34-17 entering the final period. The Bulldogs are now 0-19 under Mullen when trailing entering the fourth quarter.
Mullen has yet to be shutout in 50 games as the head man at MSU. It is the third longest stretch at MSU.
to pick up first downs
The Bulldogs picked up 17 first downs against the Rebels.
That gives them 244 for the season and moves the 2012 Bulldogs into second place in single season first downs.
