SENATOBIA – The Starkville Academy Volunteers started and finished strong in defeating North Delta Academy 55-35 at the Magnolia Heights Tournament on Thursday.
Starkville Academy, which ended a two-game losing streak and improved its record to 6-8, established a 12-3 lead after the first quarter.
Despite being out-scored 15-10 in the second quarter, the Vols still held a 22-18 advantage at the halftime break.
SA got rolling again in the second half and especially in the second quarter by out-scoring North Delta 21-9.
The Vols had 18 assists and 17 steals during the course of the game.
"We did a great job of sharing the basketball and defensively we really picked things up," SA boys coach Mark Alexander said.
Carnail Minor led the Vols with 19 points, while Raheem Robinson also scored in double figures with 12 points. Brandon Lane and Caleb Merchant scored eight points each.
Brandon Sharpe had nine assists.
SA advanced to meet Hernando at 4:45 p.m. today.

SENATOBIA – The Lady Volunteers got 21 points from Maggie Proffitt in the first round of the Magnolia Heights Tournament.
Starkville Academy, which improved to 18-0, led North Delta 13-8 after the first quarter, then increased the margin to 22-10 by halftime.
The Lady Vols held a 31-11 advantage in rebounding and hit 28-of-52 shots from the field.
Anna Lea Little joined Proffitt in scoring in double digits with 15 points. Sallie Kate Richardson pulled down eight rebounds.
SA plays Kirk Academy of Grenada at 3:30 p.m. today in the second round.
