Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt confirmed 23-year-old Deseane K. Robinson of 2011 Williams Road in Starkville died after a two-car head-on collision on Louisville Street early Friday morning.
Robinson was the passenger in a northbound 2004 Pontiac Grand Am that collided with a southbound 2007 Jeep Wrangler at 2:02 a.m. at the corner of Louisville Street and Boxwood Lane across from Starkville High School.
According to a Starkville Police Department release, the driver of the Jeep was 22-year-old Christopher James of 145 Chapel Lane in Madison. Jeree Blackwell, 25, of 118 Montgomery St. No. 5 in Starkville, was driving the Pontiac.
Both were transported to OCH Regional Medical Center. One of them was then transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. Both are in stable condition, Hunt said.
Starkville police officers and firemen responded to the scene to find the Grand Am had burst into flames. Firemen worked to extricate Robinson from the car after finding him pinned inside it, a Starkville Police Department release said.
He died as a result of the injuries but it is unclear if he died because of the impact with the other vehicle or the fire. An autopsy has not yet been completed.
James had been thrown from the vehicle and was found face down in a ditch full of water before officers rescued him from drowning, the release said.
Investigators are trying to determine if alcohol was a factor.
