CANTON, Miss – First round playoffs are over for the Starkville Lady Yellowjackets.
After fighting hard the whole game, the Lady Jackets return to Starkville with a victory over Yazoo City.
"It was a close game," Starkville coach Kristie Williams said. "It was a battle the entire game."
Demonstrating just how close the game was the fact that as the halftime buzzer sounded the teams were separated by three points as Starkville led 25-22.
Things did not change much during the second half as the Lady Jackets continued to lead and ultimately left Canton with a 50-47 win.
One of the keys to victory for Starkville was its time at the charity stripe. Going 21-26 from the free throw line, the Lady Jackets were led by Blair Schaefer who was a perfect 14-14 from the line.
Schaefer also led Starkville in scoring with 27 points, followed by Imane Montgomery with 10 points. Kelsye Reed rounded out the Lady Jackets top three with nine points and eight rebounds.
With the win Starkville advances to face Canton at 6 p.m. on Friday.
