He served in various positions at Mississippi State University for 39 years. An agronomist, he considered a major purpose in his life was to feed the world by reproducing good hybrid seed in a free market system. He was Director of the Seed Technology Laboratory for a number of years and then served as Director of International Programs in Agriculture and Forestry until his retirement in 1985. He spent 3 years (1964-67) in Brazil as Program Head of an MSU/USAID project to help Brazil develop a strong seed production program. During the course of his career, he traveled extensively to developing countries needing his expertise. He also spent those years working with students from around the world who came to Mississippi State to get advanced degrees in agronomy.
Dr. Bunch is survived by his wife of 71 years. When he proposed to Jeanette, he said, “Marry me and we’ll feed the world!” She did her part by providing three more mouths to feed.
Children Karen, Gary and Deanna survive him along with grandchildren Ben, Allie, Daniel, Andrew, and Jonathan and Michael; two great-granddaughters, Aralyn Grace and Claudia Wren.
Those preceding him in death include his parents, Harry and Frances; his sister, Eileen; and his infant son, David Lane.
Dean and Jeanette are charter members of Trinity Presbyterian and would appreciate, in lieu of flowers, that contributions be given to that church for the Water Project Mission which brings fresh water to many parts of the world.
