Starkville Fire Department marshals are investigating the cause of a blaze that destroyed the interior of a hotel room Thursday.
A shift manager at America’s Best Value Inn & Suites on Miss. Highway 12 said she called 911 after a customer came into the lobby and said he saw smoke coming from the back of the building.
SFD Training Officer Charles Yarbrough said firefighters arrived on the scene at approximately 1:25 p.m. to find a fire had started inside a room on the back portion of the hotel.
They contained the fire to the inside of the room and extinguished the flames quickly, he said.
The shift manager, who refused to be identified, said neither the room where the fire took place nor any nearby rooms were occupied at the time the smoke was first reported and there was no one in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
