From staff reports
Memorial arrangements for Mississippi State University President Emeritus Donald W. Zacharias were finalized Monday.
A public memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the MSU Colvard Student Union’s Foster Ballroom with a visitation reception to follow. Speakers for the service will include MSU President Mark Keenum, former interim MSU President Roy Ruby, MSU Foundation Board Member Lewis Mallory and MSU Alumni Association Executive Director Jimmy Abraham.
Parking will be available at the Palmiero Center, and shuttle buses will transport guests to and from the Union every 10 to 15 minutes beginning at 9:30 a.m.
Zacharias, who led the university from 1985-97, died early Sunday of complications from multiple sclerosis following an extended illness at age 77. The 15th university president’s 12-year tenure was the second longest in the institution’s history, second only to first president Stephen D. Lee’s 19 years at the helm.
On Monday, Miss. Gov. Phil Bryant ordered flags on the MSU campuses lowered to half-staff in Zacharias’ memory through sunset on Thursday.
According to an MSU press release, a private funeral service for family will be held Friday, and the university requests the family’s privacy to be considered during the service.
