The Starkville Yellowjackets knew the challenge was going to be difficult against the much-bigger Brandon Bulldogs in the final game of the Starkville Thanksgiving Classic Saturday night.
Starkville showed it was up for the challenge and claimed a 60-55 victory at home.
“It was a big win for us,” Jackets coach Greg Carter said. “That is a good team, (and) something different for us. We didn’t defend well the first half. (We) didn’t defend or rebound very well. (In) second half, we came out and the third quarter we set the tone defensively a little bit.”
Zeb Rice opened scoring for SHS with a pair of threes putting the team up 6-0. After allowing the Bulldogs to cut the lead to one, Dantavius Self was good for two points to make it 8-5 in favor of the Jackets. Back-to-back baskets from Richard Evans took it to 11-7, then he provided a pair of free throws making it 13-10 with Starkville in the lead.
