Whether it’s bringing potato soup to a terminally ill cancer patient or heading a city election commission dealing with one of the most hotly-contested Starkville elections in recent history, Jim McKell has a reputation for being there when it matters.
A history buff, retired educator, master gardener, and avid tennis and bridge player, McKell has often used his talents to serve others. A Starkville native, McKell earned both a bachelor’s and master’s in history at Mississippi State University, according to his sister Jan Smith, before embarking on a 32-year teaching career in Key West, Fla. He returned to Starkville in 1998, where Smith said her brother has quietly gone about enhancing the lives of the people around him.
