MABEN – Starkville High School and East Webster rewarded fans in attendance on Friday night to a little free baseball.
After battling through four extra innings, the Yellowjackets secured a 2-1 road victory.
"Good game," Starkville coach Travis Garner said. "They are a good ball club. You can throw classification out the window. They threw a couple pitchers that were good enough to get anyone out."
It was a solo home run by A.J. Brown in the 11th inning that enabled SHS to leave the Cumberland area with the victory.
The odds may not have swung in the favor of the Wolverines, but coach Wes Johnson "could not be prouder" of his team and their effort.
"Those guys went out there and battled." Johnson said. "That is what high school baseball is about. Those guys came out and had fun. They played hard. Somebody is going to win and somebody is going to lose every ball game. It is a shame somebody had to lose that one, but give Starkville credit. That guy stepped up when he had to and got the big hit, but I could not be more proud of our guys."
