Sometimes, the best way to teach people about global hunger may be to feed them — unequally.
That’s the idea behind Oxfam’s Hunger Banquet program, which has been a staple of the charity organization’s outreach for four decades. Attendees are randomly assigned to an upper-class table, a middle-class table or a set of lower-class seats. The upper-class attendees get a nutritious meal with meat, vegetables, salads, dinner rolls and a choice of drink. The middle-class attendees get one portion of beans, one portion of rice and water. The lower-class attendees — which are always the majority — receive half a portion of rice and water.
