Nancy Katherine Lindley was born August 18, 1924 in Louisville, Kentucky; the youngest of five children and the only daughter of Richard Bass and Erma Lou Hopper Penick. The family moved to Macon, Mississippi while Nancy was still in grade school, where her father found work as a carpenter.
While still in high school, she met Charles E. Lindley, a native of the Noxubee County community of Shuqualak, near Macon. At 18, Nancy was crowned Miss Macon; obviously, the prettiest girl in the county, as Charles was well aware, and romance blossomed. Charles was attending Mississippi State A & M (now Mississippi State University) until the outbreak of WWII. Instead of remaining in school to complete his degree in Animal Husbandry, he joined the United States Army Air Corp where he flew P-47 Thunderbolt fighters in combat over Europe. When the war concluded, he returned to Mississippi State to complete his degree and the two were married in 1946.
They soon moved to Pullman, Washington and Washington State University where Charles completed his Master's degree and Nancy received her Bachelor's degree in Horticulture. They subsequently returned to Mississippi State, where Charles became the interim Head of the Animal Husbandry department. In 1954, they moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma where Charles began work on his Doctorate degree at Oklahoma State University. Their first child, Charles E., Jr. was born there in 1956. Later that year, they returned to Mississippi where Charles resumed his duties as Head of the Animal Husbandry department. In 1970, Charles became the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Home Economics at MSU where he remained until his retirement in 1990. When her children became older, Nancy became employed at the Mathematics department at Mississippi State. In 1962, their second son, William Penick Lindley, was born, and in 1965, they built a home in Starkville where Nancy lived until 2011 when she moved to Carrollton, Georgia to be near her two adult sons.
Nancy is survived by her two sons, and four grand children. William (Bill) lives in the Johns Creek community, just north of Atlanta with his wife, Dede. They have two children, Wes, 26, and Hailey, who is 21. Wes works in Atlanta as an account manager with American Express, and Hailey is a junior at the University of Georgia. Charles, Jr. (Charlie) lives in Carrollton Ga. with his wife, Donna. They also have two children, Katie, 22, works in New York City in the publishing business, and Madison, 19, is a freshman at UGA.
Visiatation for Nancy will be held Friday, May 9, 2014 from 12-2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Starkville, MS with the funeral service immediately following at 2 conducted by Rev. Prentiss Gordon and Rev. David Shumaker. Burial will follow in Memorial Garden Park.
