The Mississippi State Bulldogs loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth innings.
It didn't matter as the No. 18 Bulldogs left all six runners on base and dropped a 4-2 decision to Tennessee Friday night to open a three-game Southeastern Conference series at Dudy Noble Field.
"We're going to look in the rearview mirror and realize we let this one obviously slip away from us," MSU head coach John Cohen said.
The Bulldogs (31-19, 14-11) trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the eighth inning. They loaded the bases thanks to walks to Brett Pirtle, Seth Heck and an infield single on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Cody Walker.
The next three batters, Cody Brown, Jake Vickerson and Derrick Armstrong struck out to leave the bases loaded.
