The Starkville Academy boys cross country team place second overall at the North AAA Regional meet on Monday with four individuals placing in the top 20.
The boys team was led by sophomore Austin Miles with a course PR of 20:53 and a ninth place finish, followed by 6th Grader Lake Spradling with a 13th place finish and course PR of 22:12, sophomore Matthew Christiansen with a 14th place finish and course PR of 22:14 and 8th grader Layton Little with a time of 22:52.
The Lady Volunteers ran individually with freshman Courtney Chesnut having a strong showing and placing ninth overall with a course PR of 14:47, followed by sophomore Christa Wilburn with a time of 16:11, freshman Brooke Pogue with a course PR of 18:03, and sophomore Laura Austin Crain with a course PR of 21:25.
"I was very pleased with my boys team pulling together for a second place finish, considering the majority of their team are 9th grade and below," SA coach Susan Willard said. "They proved (Monday) that not only are they capable of competing with the larger schools in our region, but also possess the foundation to continue building a team that will be even more competitive in the future."
The Vols cross country teams head to Choctaw Trails in Clinton Monday to finish the season at the AAA State Meet.
