Volunteers are being sought for a second community work day to continue cleanup efforts at the tornado-ravaged Pines Trailer Park.
Members of the Starkville High School Class of 1975 organized a work day last Saturday at The Pines and were successful in cleaning significant amounts of fallen tree limbs and other vegetative debris from the late-night tornado that struck there Nov. 29.
Last week, Class of 1975 member Geri Jones and two of her classmates had been volunteering at The Pines to help the residents there, but soon discovered that many of the residents are elderly with disabilities and cannot participate in the cleanup.
The work day last weekend was a solution she and her classmates devised after several concerned citizens asked about what help was needed, Jones said.
“I know that the residents of the mobile home park were very grateful and appreciative for our efforts,” Jones said.
After a last Saturday’s work day was a success, she and her classmates saw the need to for a second work day this weekend to continue removing fallen trees and vegetative debris and —
pending consultation with the management at The Pines — begin removing damaged mobile home debris, Jones said.
The second work day will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, with those participating being asked to gather by the office building at The Pines.
The work day will be held unless poor weather prevents it; should there be bad weather, the work day will be rescheduled for Dec. 18.
Those who plan to help are asked to bring yard rakes, shovels, power saws, garbage bags, garbage cans, trucks and trailers, Jones said. Protective eyewear and work gloves are also encouraged, Jones added.
“The more people we have, the more we can get done to help these people recover,” she said.
Several businesses supported last week’s cleanup effort and made donations, including Shipley’s Donuts, Domino’s Pizza, Coca-Cola, The Cake Box and Golden Triangle Waste Services for the large containers used to remove debris.
Jones also thanked Annie L. Norman, Vicki L. West and Ada Rich Williams for their help in organizing the work days.
