Representatives from the Starkville Area Arts Council presented Mississippi State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences with a $5,000 check from the Everything Garden Expo scholarship fund.
Jud Skelton, director of development, accepted the check. The funds will be applied to the tuitions of five Mississippi State University undergraduates studying landscape architecture, ornamental horticulture, floral design, agricultural science and forestry. Each department will select a single recipient.
The Starkville Area Arts Council and other community groups sponsor the two-day Everything Garden Expo each March, with seminars, vendors and children’s activities. The scholarships were established in 2008 with funds provided by the Greater Starkville Development Project and entrance and vendor fees.
“We started the scholarships because we want students to avoid the financial burden of loans. Some students wouldn’t stay in school without scholarships,” said Imogene Triplett, co-chair. “For others, the cost of education places a big financial strain on their families.”
The 2010 scholarship recipients were Olivia Bell, Wade Hummer, Molly Mauney, John Formby and Michael Natrass.
