Highway Patrol: roads pretty fair

Mississippi Highway Patrol Troop G said roads should be “pretty fair” Friday, according to public affairs Brian Mobley.
“We still urge motorists to use extreme caution, especially on overpasses and bridges,” Mobley said Thursday afternoon. “I believe the roads should be pretty fair [Firday]. Keep in mind temperatures dropping tonight will probably cause anything that is on the roads to refreeze.”
Though most of the ice on the roads melted Thursday afternoon, any ice or snow remaining on the roads will most likely refreeze with temperatures dropping to the lower teens Thursday night.
Mobley reported that in the northeastern district, there were less than 10 wrecks Thursday and upwards of 30 cars that had run off the road into ditches. Mobley added that none of those incidences happened in Oktibbeha County, and only one minor injury was reported in Winston County.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation have deemed the roads free and clear; however, Mobley doesn’t want that to lull drivers into a false sense of security as nothing can account for small patches of ice along roadways. Erring on the side of caution, Mobley advises drivers to be alert while driving.

Schools

As of Thursday afternoon, Oktibbeha County School District Supt. James Covington had not made a decision regarding reopening school for Friday.
“We have drivers out now on the county roads,” Covington said. “But we won’t make a decision until later tonight about school.”
Covington reports that the district will utilize the messaging system that sends alerts to phones and e-mail accounts. He also advises parents to monitor the local news stations for school closing updates.
The Starkville School District will utilize it’s Alert Now system to contact parents about school closing for Friday. The local news stations will also be alerted, and parents are encouraged to watch the news for the latest in school closings.
