A 20-year-old Mississippi State University student died in a single-vehicle crash in Starkville late Saturday night, officials said.
Matthew Elliot Johnson, whose last known address is 4655 Bell Forrest Cove, Olive Branch was pronounced dead at the scene, said Oktibbeha County Coroner Michael Hunt.
Johnson died after the 2004 Honda Accord he was driving eastbound on Locksley Way left the roadway and struck a wooden fence, Starkville police said in a statement issued late Sunday afternoon.
The car came to rest in a field slightly to the west of the MSU School of Veterinary Medicine. The collision took place around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. He was wearing a seat belt.
Johnson died of head trauma, the coroner said.
Two other MSU students – a female and a male – were in the vehicle when the accident took place but were not severely injured, police said in the statement.
Starkville police crash re-constructionists continue to investigate the accident.
