SHS golfers win second straight meet

The Starkville Yellowjacket golf team was able to shoot a 170 on Monday afternoon which was good enough to win a meet against Caledonia and West Point.
Moving forward, SHS golf coach Sam Bryant believes his unit can have a better showing on the card to set up for a good ending to the season.
"We would like our scores to get lower," Bryant said. "We've got the potential and could probably take anywhere between 10 to 15 strokes off a 170. We should probably average as a team in the lower 160s to right around 160 because we've got a veteran group.
"It's getting back into the golf swing of things. I think they came out of the gates trying a little too hard to compete."
The Jackets lost their first two meets of the season, but have come back to win two straight.
"We're settling down and our game should round out some as we continue on through the spring," Bryant said. "I think we'll be a good and competitive squad."
Starkville's score was good enough Monday to out-distance itself from Caledonia's 186 and West Point's 234 in the three-team matchup at the Mississippi State Golf Course.
Ben Newman, a senior Jacket, shot a 2-over 38 and was the medalist for the meet.
"I was able to keep the ball in play with my shots and was able to roll in a few putts and save par," Newman said. "I was able to birdie one hole."
Following Newman was Ryan Lacy (43), Logan Maddox (42), Jace Hobart (47) and Caleb Jackson (56).
Newman agreed with his coach that Starkville has been inconsistent and understands improvement can be made.
"Overall as a team, we didn't play as well as we could have, but we were still able to win today against a good team in Caledonia and also beat West Point in the process," Newman said. "We've been up and down, but got better at spring break. We're looking to get better the rest of the year."
The next meet for the Jackets will be against Columbus at the Elm Lake Golf Course in Lowndes County.
