Starkville’s Town and Country Garden Club took a trip to West Point to enjoy the home and garden of Stephen Bengel, interior designer for The Fore Seasons at Old Waverly. Bengel purchased the home two years ago in November and began remodeling the home and surrounding gardens. The previous owner took an old barn and converted it into the house. Bengel has taken the concept much further, with the addition of a front porch purchased n upstate new York last fall. In the garden, a large gardenia, gigantic pecan trees and large azaleas have remained from the previous owner. Bengel describes the gardens as a “work in progress,” with over 3,000 bulbs planted in the backyard and a new property addition which will expand the garden. Bengel added a brick wall and courtyard in the back, the fence, the front porch and walkways. Bookcases and three fireplaces were also added to the home. The front door comes from the boyhood home of famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. His personal decorating reflects his love of antiques and a variety of personal collections, including watches. Lauren Coggins of The Fore Seasons served as a tour guide for the Bengel Home.
