An aggressive attack by Starkville firefighters extinguished an early morning garage fire Sunday before it spread to the rest of the residence.
At approximately 8:11 a.m., SFD crews from stations one, two and three responded to a fire at 90 Leflore Street in the Rolling Hills subdivision.
SFD Fire Marshal Mark McCurdy said a neighbor discovered the fire, called 911 and alerted the home’s occupants. Three adults were in the house at the time of the fire, McCurdy said, but all escaped without injury.
Once on scene, firefighters discovered the home’s attached garage and its attic area engulfed by flames.
“That whole entire section of the house was on fire,” McCurdy said.
SFD firefighters knocked down the flames in a matter of minutes and stayed on scene for almost three hours overhauling the area and making sure no hot spots reignited the home.
“Our guys made a good interior attack on the fire and got a hold of it quickly,” SFD Chief Rodger Mann said.
McCurdy said investigators remained on scene until 5 p.m. The fire originated in the garage’s attic area, McCurdy said, but its cause is still under investigation.
Smoke detectors were present in the house and did function properly during the emergency.
