It was an 8-0 run in the second half of the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers victory over Jackson Prep Thursday night which enabled them to improve their record to 8-0 this season.
A good start and finish was the story for the Lady Vols as they defeated the visiting Lady Patriots 49-38.
"I think our first quarter and our fourth quarter were our best ones," Starkville Academy coach Glenn Schmidt said. "I was surprised that they guarded our shooters, left the middle wide open and we were able to get the ball in there.
"They adjusted a little bit on that and we got to run some offense, but I think defensively we did a great job to hold Prep to 38 points. Nora Kathryn kind of shut (Margaret) Horsley down and did a good job on Laurel Bane who only got 18."
Sallie Kate Richardson scored 12 points in the first quarter as the Lady Vols took a 16-6 lead.
"We were really physical and knew what had to be done," Richardson said. "We knew they were a tough team and we had to match up to it and we did."
Prep got back into the game a bit by narrowing the gap to 25-16 at halftime, then got within seven points at 33-26 on a basket by Sara Bolen with 7 minutes left in the game.
Starkville Academy went on the 8-0 run with the help of six points by Richardson to extend the advantage to 41-26.
Schmidt was happy to see her team put the game away at that point.
"We got ahead and kept playing hard," Schmidt said. "We showed a little bit of wanting to put the nail in the coffin. I actually got excited when we made a run on them because sometimes we just sit back and wait so I'm proud of my team."
Richardson had a double-double for the Lady Vols with 25 points and 12 rebounds. Anna Lea Little also scored in double figures with 10 points.
Schmidt saw several SA players contribute in various areas.
"(Richardson) is doing a great job to get open and we are doing a great job to get it in there to her," Schmidt said. "Anna Prestridge does a tremendous job of controlling the game.
"Off the bench, we had April Burney, Lauren Atwell and Brittany Jacks to help and give us rest. They pressed us and we were able to handle that."
In junior high action, the Lady Vols earned a 44-40 win in overtime against Prep. Anna McKell scored 15 points, while Alex McCafferty also scored in double digits with 10 points.
The Starkville Academy teams host Oak Hill on Monday.
