County firefighters responded to 3500 Maben-Sturgis Road at 9 a.m. yesterday for a house fire that was well underway when emergency responders first arrived on the scene, Oktibbeha County Fire Services Coordinator Kirk Rosenhan said.
The home was not occupied at the time of the fire, Rosenhan said, as the owner was in Florida.
Sturgis firefighters began an aggressive attack on the flames and were supported by both Maben and Central volunteer firefighters. Supporting firefighters set up a water shuttle and brought extra oxygen.
Firefighters were at the scene for over three hours battling the flames, dousing hot spots and following post-fire procedures.
Rosenhan said a defective home appliance is believed to have started the blaze. The fire, he said, reached the attic and spread quickly throughout the house.
“The house was pretty much a total loss,” Rosenhan said. “There were some things that could possibly be salvaged, but not a lot.”
